Refactoring Business Capability Models to Support A Robust Business Architecture Knowledge Base
Troy Nelson, Chief Enterprise Architect, UCare
Abstract: Many organizations find themselves with business capability models created by external consultancies or analyst organizations that were purpose built for a specific use or problem area (project estimation, portfolio management, etc.) To no surprise, these models often blend capability and non-capability concepts in order to support those specific uses. The resulting models cannot be used to build a complete business architecture knowledge base. This presentation will provide recommendations and real-world examples on how to realign and refactor these capability models using the Business Architecture Guild’s industry reference models, coupled with guidance from the Guild’s BIZBOK® Guide, to provide a solid foundation for a robust knowledge base.
Bio: Troy Nelson is Chief Enterprise Architect at UCare, an independent, nonprofit health plan based in Minneapolis, MN. He is a Certified Business Architect® (CBA®), board member of the Twin Cities Business Architecture Forum, and member of the Guild’s Insurance Reference Model team.
