Refactoring Business Capability Models to Support A Robust Business Architecture
Knowledge Base

Troy Nelson, Chief Enterprise Architect, UCare

Many organizations find themselves with business capability models created by external consultancies or analyst organizations that were purpose built for a specific use or problem area (project estimation, portfolio management, etc.) To no surprise, these models often blend capability and non-capability concepts in order to support those specific uses. The resulting models cannot be used to build a complete business architecture knowledge base. This presentation will provide recommendations and real-world examples on how to realign and refactor these capability models using the Business Architecture Guild’s industry reference models, coupled with guidance from the Guild’s BIZBOK® Guide, to provide a solid foundation for a robust knowledge base.

Troy Nelson is Chief Enterprise Architect at UCare, an independent, nonprofit health plan based in Minneapolis, MN. He is a Certified Business Architect® (CBA®), board member of the Twin Cities Business Architecture Forum, and member of the Guild’s Insurance Reference Model team.
